Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB) or Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) networks (all of this terminology is used within the industry) are essentially networks that have fiber optic cable installed. Typically these types of networks are within real estate developments, resorts, campus environments or communities – and have fiber optic cable terminating directly into a home, business or premise. This method is being deployed (rather than traditional copper wire), because fiber can handle much more carrying capacity than copper. Fiber can support all three primary services of cable TV, very high-speed Internet and telecommunications services. Prior to Fiber-to-the-Premise implementations, three separate copper or coax cable networks would be installed to support each of these three primary services. With Fiber-to-the-Premise, all three services can be supported on one fiber network.

Internet at the Speed of Light

A fiber optic connection is another transmission technology that may be used to provide high-speed Internet access to some consumers. Fiber optics (optical fibers) are long, thin transparent fibers of glass or plastic about the diameter of a human hair and arranged in bundles called optical cables. They are enclosed by material in which Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) send light through the fiber to a detector that turns the light into an electrical signal. They are used to transmit light signals over long distances.

Optical fiber is lightweight, flexible, and the connection is extremely fast; however its availability and use are limited at this time.
